Because there were anybody to ignore the youth who was dying on the street, the 19 years of penal servitude for man who stole a loaf of bread, and bishop who give silver candles to thief. This book's most of feeling can look dismal, but it can give the bright which take off them completely. So that five comfort to many people. That is the reason why many people quote 'Les Miserable' recently. Movie is the only part of the merit, too. Now it is being used for book, musical, and movie. But I think there is more reasons.
First, because its background is revolution. In the many century, the challenge to king called by many names. When it failed, it called a rebellion. But when it succeed, it called revolution. So, Les Miserable's occasion, it can call rebellion. For all that, many people call them a revolution. So it's contour can look like revolt, but mentally, it's revolution in people's memory. Revolution have other mean, too. In this ages, revolution is very difficult. And when people see this movie, they can settle their stress for indirectly.That is the first reason why people like Les Miserable movie.
Second, because it makes its own world. As I mentioned earlier, it is combined by good and evil. But they are not certainly good and evil. Because the law which has mean like the evil wear the good, and revolt which has mean like good covered by evil like persona. Moreover, the scene of Javert's suicide was none greater than the every scene, because it doesn't look like only didactic morality, it's victory of the big shadow of law. When people break the "egg", they feel exciting. For example, Demian said "bird break out their egg. Egg is bird's world. They should break the world who want to be born." So, it is same with the challenge.
By the way, Les miserable is the timeless story, so I can’t judge the movie whether good or bad.
